Discovering Vienna

I have almost one year in Vienna, but this doesn’t mean that I don’t enjoy long walks on the Danube or finding new places.

Last week, in a sunny morning but a rainy afternoon, I decided to go and have an ice cream on Donau Kanal with one of my best friends.

We had the ice-cream part and a short walk… but the weather decided not to let us enjoy our walk. Wind started, and slowly slowly we were feeling raindrops on our body. Because we haven’t seen each other for like two months, nothing could stop us to stay together and recover the time we were not having the possibility to talk so much.

As I said, discovering new places gives you a really good feeling, but when the place is one which belongs to history then is extraordinary.

Griechenbeisl was our host that day and we had no idea how it will going to be, or which is the history of the place. From the entrance we were welcomed by low ceilings and winding cave – like halls and rooms. There are framed pictures of the outside of the restaurant from hundreds of years ago. What is impressive is that today looks almost the same.

Personally, I loved the character and sense of fun and boldness of their serving staff. They made us feel like princesses. Even though is a restaurant and we had just 2 cappuccino’s, they were really paying attention to our needs.

I cannot say how the food is, but if you want to feel like you went back in time go to Griechenbeisl and have a cup of coffee or a beer.

I have to mention that in one of the first guest houses in Vienna, dating since 1447. Artists, scholars and politicians came here to eat, drink, debate and reflect. The proof to all these is the Mark Twain room, where framed autographs of different personalities can be found.

The restaurant is easy to reach. It is located near Schwedenplatz, more precisely in Fleischmarkt 11. Give it a try, and you’ll find a place full of history.

Enjoy!

Deutsch Akademie?

I am so happy for the decision to start the german course in Deutsch Akademie. I live in Vienna already one year but my german is not really good.

Since I moved to Vienna I was thinking to start german course but becouse of my job, I didn’t really look for any intensive course. But now after one year I can see that I need somebody to help me with the hard german grammer. German is really important for me if I want to stay here and maybe to raise my kids here up one day.

So I started to look for any intensive german course. Many people on facebook recommended me Deutsch akademie so I started to look for it on internet. When I saw how many courses Deutsch akademie offer I was decided that they are the right ones. And they really are!

My first day…

It is here…

My first day in Deutsch Akademie. I couldn’t wait when this day will come. I couldn’t even sleep in the nigh becouse I was so exited how the german course will be. Which people I will meet? Which nationalities? What we will learn? Too many question and I had to wait for the answer, for the course. But the day is finally here.

I woke up in the morning with a smile on my face. I took a breakfast and I went to the tram station to take a tram to Deutsch Akademie. In 20 minutes I was there. There were too many people in the school. The first day for everybody. Everybody was checking the notice board to find their name and the right class. I found it in a minute and I could go the righ room. The class could start.

We are ten students in my class. All of us from a different countries like Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Serbian, Russia and Australia. Everybody is in around my age.

In the beggining of the lesson we introduced our selfs and then we can start. It was more than enjoyable. I learned many new things and words and all that was just a fun.

I can’t wait other day

Who am I?

Hi everybody,

my name is Adriana and I am comming from Czech Republic. I grew up in a very small village in South of Bohemia. I spend all my childhood in a village and was dreaming about living in a foreign country.

Thats one of the reason I studied Tourismus in the high school. Part of my studies was a foreign practice. That was the first time when I had the possibility to see a foreign country and to try to live there for a while. My first experience was in Cyprus. The summer there was absolutely amazing and I saw a little bit different style of life. An other three practice I spend in Greece. Two times in Chalkidiki as a weitress one time in Crete as an Kids Animator. My last practice showed me that not only english is important but also german and French. I met in Crete many great people comming from Germany and Austria that I sarted to think about an other experience abroad.

When I finished my studies I found job in Vienna and I moved. I cannot be more happy that I made this decision. I live here with my bozfriend just one year but I would love to spend my life here. Everything is so clean and everybody can find what he likes and nobody can be bored here. I just love Vienna.

Liebe Leserinnen, Liebe Leser,

Dear Readers,

Few words in English to describe our two first weeks of courses. Our courses take place in the first floor of a building in front of the Opera. Our room is located close by to the office of the Deutsch Akademie. These rooms were recently renovated and are now bigger and full of light. During the first week, we were 8 students in our group and we mainly worked on the first chapter of our book. The aim of the chapter was to learning various tipps like to perform a phone conversation, … From the second week of courses, 3 people joined our group so we were finally 11 students. We continued to work with the book on the topic concerning the culture. A part of this chapter was made with texts concerning the castle of Schönbrunn! At the end of the second week, it was on Saturday the “Stammtisch” of the “DeutschAkademie”, a nice opportunity to discuss in german (or english) with both teacher, students and even former students!

Weiter mit der DeutschAkademie: Zweite Woche – die Kultur

Liebe Leserinnen, Liebe Leser,

DA_TGS_Elefant

Deutsch Akademie Stammtish

At Deusch Akademie we are not just having classes but we are also having fun. Why I say this? In the first week of each course of the month, you will be invited at a Stammtisch… what does this mean? They invite us all in a non-formal environment to socialize, meet new people from other classes, and enjoy an evening together.

This month the Stammtish is at Bierheuriger Gangl in the old AKH (altes AKH). It is an easy to reach location, near Schottentor. You can take the subway to Schottentor and then the 44, 43, 33, 5 tram to Lange Gasse station.

13958161_837833743018972_7644977664978042046_o

Searching the Bierheuriger Gangl on the internet, I’ve seen that a variety of food and drinks can be found here… if you like beer or wine, pork/ chicken or just some dessert, for sure you will going to find something that you’d like here.

Besides the fact that maybe you will try a new place, you will have the opportunity to interact with many people, with different nationalities and backgrounds. You will have the opportunity to practice the German language and to develop your public speaking.

I can’t wait to see how their event will going to be and how many people will attend it. For me is a great opportunity to practice my communication skills and I’m happy that this kind of events are organized in a language school.

Something else, if you are not comfortable about being alone with so many strangers around, you have to know that you can bring your friends at the event.

I can’t wait to see you there!

A bientôt,

Was macht ihr am Wochenende?

I am not ready yet to write a whole post in German… but, “Was macht ihr am Wochenende?/What are you going to do this weekend?” is  my question for you and, of my current post.

The current weekend is a longer one, Monday is a National Holiday in Austria. The Catholics are celebrating the Assumption of Marry (meaning the end of her earthly life). For the ones which are new in Vienna, I have to let you know, that on National Holidays all the shops are closed, like in a normal Sunday.

Even the weather is not so good, this does not mean our social and intercultural life has to stop. Because I was searching what I can do this weekend, I said I should share my list of events with you:

  1. So, for today, 12th of August, the Planetarium of Vienna invites us to watch the Perseids. Perseids is a meteor shower which takes place every year, from around mid-July end of August. In this period Earth is crossing the orbital path of Comet Swift-Tuttle, debris from this comet litters the comet’s orbit and small pieces and bits slam into the Earth’s upper atmosphere. We can watch the Perseids anywhere on Earth, and the peak is in this night. The Planetarium of Vienna event is free and starting at 7 p.m.. More details, you can find more information on their website, in the Aktuelles – News Veranstaltungskalender.
  2. On Sunday, Prater is celebrating Franz Joseph I, and is offering free rides in some of their locations. Also, until the end of August, The Olympia Looping, the biggest roller coaster in the world can be found in Prater.                                                                                                              Good to know: 250 year ago, Joseph II opened the former hunting ground to the public and “everyone without distinction was permitted to walk, ride and drive freely in the Prater”. 20150301_172348
  1. Afrika Tage Wien Festival – on Donauinsel. If you like African music, you’re interested in their artists, craftsman, food or accessories… than you should definitely make them a visit. Monday is the last day of the Festival, so hurry hurry hurry.
  2. Impulstanz (Vienna International Dance Festival), their last day is on Sunday. If you are into dancing or you just like to watch other people dancing, then you can join them. They can be found in lots of locations, their shows are great, but you could also attend some workshops.

With the hope, that I gave you some ideas, I wish a great weekend and more sun!

Bis bald!
