Filmmakers in Vienna then and now

In the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s, Vienna had a blossoming film industry. The musical, regional and imperial films of that time may be ridiculed today, but they are still famous. The director, actor and producer Willi Forst (1903 to 1980) made his mark on the Viennese musical film genre with films such as “Bel Ami”. Ernst Marischka (1893 to 1963) made film history with his Sissi Trilogy (1954) and also by discovering Romy Schneider as a film actress.
At the end of the 1960s, the film industry came to a standstill, but since the beginning of the 1990s Austrian film makers are starting to be noticed again. They approach the film medium with great artistic ambitions. The most successful internationally is probably Michael Haneke. For his film version of Elfriede Jelinek’s literary work “Klavierspielerin” he received numerous international awards.
