January is ball season in Vienna. Beautiful and grand balls such as the Viennese Coffee Growers' Ball take place in the Vienna Hofburg. The most famous ball in the world, however, is the Vienna Opera Ball in the Vienna State Opera, directly opposite the DeutschAkademie. It is known as the ball of balls and takes place every last Thursday of Carnival. It opens every year with the words "All waltzes please!"
