Language visa: German course plus visa

Anyone who wants to take a German course for private or professional reasons can apply for a visa on this basis, also known as a language visa. The language courses must comprise at least 15 hours per week and are limited in time.

At the DeutschAkademie, we offer you a German language course that is specially tailored to these requirements: our visa course, which takes place every month online and on site at our language school in Vienna.

Do I need a visa for Austria?

If you are an EU citizen, you do not need a visa to enter and stay in Austria.

If you are not an EU citizen, you can find all further information on whether you require a visa on the website of the Entrance and Residence in Austria by the Federal Ministry Republic of Austria European and International Affairs or in our overview of visa for Austria.

Which visa do I need for a language course in Austria?

Depending on the duration of your language course in Austria, you will need different visas:

  • Schengen visa type C for short-term stays: If your language course does not last longer than 90 days, you can attend a language course with a Schengen visa.
  • Type D language visa Austria for long-term stays: If you want to stay longer than 90 days, up to a maximum of six months, you can apply for a D visa, among other things to attend language courses.
  • Pre-study language visa: Such a visa is required if you are taking the language course in preparation for studying at a university in Austria.
  • Residence permit: A residence permit for Austria is applied for locally and often lasts two to three months. It can often be unlimited. When entering Austria for the first time, it is important that the date of entry is noted in the passport with an entry stamp. This is the only way to apply for a residence permit without any problems. If there is no border control on site, you can obtain an entry stamp from the local police station.
