Was macht ihr am Wochenende?

I am not ready yet to write a whole post in German… but, “Was macht ihr am Wochenende?/What are you going to do this weekend?” is  my question for you and, of my current post.

The current weekend is a longer one, Monday is a National Holiday in Austria. The Catholics are celebrating the Assumption of Marry (meaning the end of her earthly life). For the ones which are new in Vienna, I have to let you know, that on National Holidays all the shops are closed, like in a normal Sunday.

Even the weather is not so good, this does not mean our social and intercultural life has to stop. Because I was searching what I can do this weekend, I said I should share my list of events with you:

  1. So, for today, 12th of August, the Planetarium of Vienna invites us to watch the Perseids. Perseids is a meteor shower which takes place every year, from around mid-July end of August. In this period Earth is crossing the orbital path of Comet Swift-Tuttle, debris from this comet litters the comet’s orbit and small pieces and bits slam into the Earth’s upper atmosphere. We can watch the Perseids anywhere on Earth, and the peak is in this night. The Planetarium of Vienna event is free and starting at 7 p.m.. More details, you can find more information on their website, in the Aktuelles – News Veranstaltungskalender.
  2. On Sunday, Prater is celebrating Franz Joseph I, and is offering free rides in some of their locations. Also, until the end of August, The Olympia Looping, the biggest roller coaster in the world can be found in Prater.                                                                                                              Good to know: 250 year ago, Joseph II opened the former hunting ground to the public and “everyone without distinction was permitted to walk, ride and drive freely in the Prater”. 20150301_172348
  1. Afrika Tage Wien Festival – on Donauinsel. If you like African music, you’re interested in their artists, craftsman, food or accessories… than you should definitely make them a visit. Monday is the last day of the Festival, so hurry hurry hurry.
  2. Impulstanz (Vienna International Dance Festival), their last day is on Sunday. If you are into dancing or you just like to watch other people dancing, then you can join them. They can be found in lots of locations, their shows are great, but you could also attend some workshops.

With the hope, that I gave you some ideas, I wish a great weekend and more sun!

Bis bald!

First week… checked

In the first two posts I was speaking about my emotions in regards the class… but here I am now, after one week, my emotions past, I already had 12 hours of German and met 11 new people, my colleagues and teacher.

On short… the first day, was the day in which we met our teacher, get to know each other, but we also started our first lesson.

Currently, in my class, we are 11 people, from different countries and with different personalities. I have colleagues from Asia, America (South and North) and of course Europe. They all agreed with me taking pictures during classes, and I’m thinking maybe I’ll write some more things about them in the future.

Our teacher is a great women, she has all the necessary patience to explain every single word, tries to communicate with each one of us, but most important… beside the planned course words and grammatical part, she tries to get to know us better, to create connections and find similar interests, helping us to communicate more.

The classroom arrangement, offer us the possibility to see all our colleagues making the interaction easier. The room is a bright one, with big windows. On the walls, can be found different outlines from the German grammar. All in all, is a comfy room, which invites you to study.

Each day was an intense one. New words and grammar rules pop up in our face. In order to inforce the information received during classes, we also receive homework, each day, two-three or for exercises. In this way, we do not forget about German till the next day… we sit at home, in our favorite spot where we make the exercises and remember the new words.

In our first week we also had to do a small composition about our dream house J.

So, if you are thinking that joining a private school is not so intense, than Deutsch Akademie is not the place for you! In Deutsch Akademie you’ll find intense classes, with a lot of interaction, communication, grammar rules, exercises and homework. All of this are for our own good and improvement.

In conclusion, my first week was a beautiful one, I met new people and learnt new words/ expressions… I can’t wait for the next weeks and classes. Until then, is weekend, a good moment to practice our skills and of course, do the homework.

Have a great weekend!

Vienna Ice Cream Festival

Monday, 8th of August is the big day… my first day at Deutsch Akademie. With some emotions, I started to think about it since the weekend… Well yeah, I haven’t been in a language class since some years ago, I could say high school, so I am a little bit curious on how it will going to be, how many people will be in the class, but most important, how the teacher will be? I have only a couple of hours until I will find out the answers to all my questions.

Trying to release my mind and body of all this tension, I said I could spend some time to the famous Vienna Ice Cream Festival (yeeey…. As I mentioned in my first post, I am a big ice cream lover). My thoughts and impressions about it are well, not very good, but I am an exigent person. I will try to give you some insights, and let you decide if you’ll going to visit them next year.

First of all, Vienna International Festival, was held for the first time this year. From this point of view, we have to appreciate the idea of the event. It’s an innovative idea, something different and which gathered a lot of people together. I’m thinking that in an internationalized city like Vienna, the Ice Cream festival, managed to attract a lot of citizens from the young to the older ones.

The location, Burggarten (the former private gardens of the Emperor), was also magical and ideal. Easy to find and reach, in a super central place, with a lot of trees and grass. Taking into account the place, not only Vienna citizens were aware of the event, but was also visible for the many tourists which visit Vienna in this period.

Now, about the whole Festival. I arrived there on Sunday, around 1 o’clock. Even though it was a sunny day and midday, the place was really crowded. We started at a point A (right in front of the library) and went in circle to see all the exhibitors/ sellers. I was able to find ice cream, frozen yogurt, some trucks with food (mostly burgers, hot-dogs and pizza) and a Water Splash Area, where guns filled with water were waiting and inviting you at a battle.

If you want to try something you have to be patient, at all the lines were at least 10 people, but at one at the entrance, was a huge line, where maybe (not to exaggerate) 50 people were waiting for their ice cream. For me, this was a little too much. You can have an ice cream in their Gelateria, and not to wait at a 50 people line. I would suggest for the next year, a better preparation and maybe more people in the stuff.

All in all, I liked it… it was ice cream on grass. I had a big cup of frozen yogurt with fruits and coconut topping which was great, but we were way too many people in such a small garden.

If you were at the festival I hope you enjoyed it. For me worked, I forgot for a while about by emotions, and I got energized for a new week, full of new challenges.

Bis bald!

Me, Myself and I

Hello,

My name is Ivona Costan and during my classes at Deutsch Akademie, I’ll try to be a Vienna and Deutsch Akademie Ambassador for their blog readers.

First of all, let me introduce myself, by writing a couple of words of me and my passions.

My name is Ivona, and I grew up in a small bilingual city, in Transylvania, Romania. At 19 years old, I moved to Bucharest to follow my dreams. Here, I obtained two bachelor degrees and two master degrees, in Environmental Protection and Project Management. I am that kind of person who likes to study =)).

Over the last 10 years, I’ve build my life on three simple principles: study/ evolve/ work smarter. I have much to offer in the way of diversity of experience and profession.

Since early age I showed a great interest in learning new languages. I took the opportunity to help others in discovering the beauty of learning a foreign language and culture… but here I am now, when I need the help of others in order to better understand the German language and assimilate the Austrian/ Viennese culture, so I enrolled to the Deutsch Akademie courses.

I love walking in nature, and I enjoy reading (from newspapers and bestsellers to scientific articles or books). I like to try new things, and starting with last year I play mobile and video games (daily and weekly). In the category of trying new things is also the cooking :), which is quite enjoyable for me, if it means to try a new recipe of food, desserts or drinks.

In addition to all this, I’m doing volunteer work since I was 15 years old and I’m considering that the voice of civil society is leading to important changes that we seek to see into the world.

In need of a new challenge, I moved to Vienna, where currently I plan to live. I need to learn the language but also to find a job (my dream one :D).

I can’t wait to make new friends and discover all the world beauties together.

P.S. Last but not least (mostly for my colleagues), I adore Ice Cream!  1.1. Ivona Costan1.2. Ivona Costan
