Maifest im Prater

This is a heads up for first of May, “lobar day”. It will be sunny, trust me I checked the forecast a couple of times, and there will be a festival in Prater organized by SPÖ (don’t tell me you don’t know the name of the Austria political parties, at least the reds, one of the oldest ones….Sozialdemokratische Partei Österreichs…), Wiener Kulturservice and Wiener Praterverband. It is called Maifest and will start at 13:00 and will last till night. The interesting part is here: there will be free beer for the first 200 people entering there!

The festival is basically a band contest, and Austrian version. All the bands (around 1000) were competing during the year and just a few of them get to the final which takes place on this day! So you can enjoy the top popular Austrian music (and the beer if you hurry up!)

one suggestion: no matter what is your view on politics or how involved you are in any sort of activities, if you are living in Vienna and learning German, it is good to know some thing about the political parties in Austria/Vienna. At least the names or the abbreviation. It is always a way of practicing German by reading about some general knowledge, let’s say political parties in Austria in wikipedia in German. The text is easy (so it is appropriate for us, the beginners) and you will gain some knowledge. Even if you don“t understand all the words, don’t worry. try to get the most, the sentence structure and the conjugation of the verbs you know.

The short story of steigen

So, here goes our first “Deutsch tip of the day”. Today I would like to talk about “phrasal verbs” or as they are called in German “trennbare/untrennbare Verben”. We are all familiar with these kind of verbs in English, to give an example :
He turned on the radio, I turned it down. He turned it up, I turned it off.
The same verb with different prepositions has different meanings. This is a ’separable‘ form of “phrasal verb” (trennbare in German),, the other form of “phrasal verb” in English are the ones that the preposition and the main verb are used always together (untrennbare in German), for instance understand (under+stand).

So going back to our German tip, soon you will realize there are tons of “phrasal verbs” in German and many verbs share the main part (or the stem) and are different only in the preposition part. You need to know the meaning of each and the exact difference between them. I remember in A1.1 for the first time we encountered a phrasal verb. The verb was “einsteigen”, a lady stepped in a car…. I asked our teacher (Nikole) “Was bedeutet steigen” and she was trying to make me understand that the verb I need to know its meaning in that context is “einsteigen” and not “steigen”.
Yesterday Alex thought us some (I don’t think all) of the phrasal verbs made with “steigen”.
– aussteigen
– einsteigen
– umsteigen
– draufsteigen
– aufsteigen
– absteigen
– besteigen

As you can see at least there are 7 of them listed here. Although most of these are dealing with means of transportation (e.g. bus, train, horse and bike) but there are some that they have nothing to do with means of transportation. “Einsteigen” and “aussteigen” mean to get in and get out of a vehicle, respectively. But for instance “besteigen” means to climb to top of a mountain!

I am sure you all know how to use separable phrasal verbs in German, isn’t it? I am just asking… Ich frage an 😉

Exercise for Deutsch Akademie “GEEKS”: try to find different phrasal verbs that are made from the same stem but have distinct meanings.

Bärlauch

Today I want to talk about Ramsons, in German “Bärlauch”. In English it is also called “bear’s garlic” which I guess is a translation of the German name. It is a plant with long flat thin leaves. These days you can find them in supermarkets such as Spar in the fresh vegetable department in packaging similar to the the ones for mushrooms for example. It has garlic-like taste/smell but a bit lighter. If you are fan of going to nature in and around Vienna, these days you have the opportunity to simply pick them from ground in one of the many natural parks around Vienna.

These days that we are having such a good weather in Vienna, you can make a perfect half-day excursion and have some fun and get some fresh Bärlauch. My personal suggestion is “Lainzer Tiergarten”. You need to take U4 metro line till the station Hütteldorf. Over there you need to go through few streets and try to find one of the entrances to the park. The one we always use to enter the park is called “Nikolaitor”, I am sure you can easily find it on Google maps.
Few notes about Bärlauch:
– if you are thinking about it, you have to hurry up. Maybe around a week or 10 days will be already late. Soon there will be another plant called “Lily of the Valley” growing the same place as Bärlauch grows. “Lily of the Valley” and 2 other plants with similar appearance to Bärlauch are poisonous and can be lethal!!!! so please be careful and double check the leaves you pick before you eat them. These plants have similar leaves but all have different flowers than Bärlauch and none has this garlic-like scent. The simple test is to just squeeze one leaf and if you smell the garlic scent that’s it, you got the Bärlauch! Also the flowers are different. Before you experience any hospital emergency situation, simply google the flowers of Bärlauch on the Internet.
– Bärlauch leaves are rather delicate, you need to consume them with in a day or so. You can cook them like spinach, or even use a leaf in an afternoon sandwich to give some taste to it.
– It is advised to inspect the leaves for insects inside (!) them before you eat. There is larva of an insect that lives inside the leave between the two sides and feeds on it. The way to check it is very simple: just hold the leaf toward light and look if you see any thing strange inside or not. This little larva usually eats the leave from inside and only let a very very thin layer of the outer part of the leave to remain and that is how it dwells inside and indulges the Bärlauch!
– Bärlauch is also sold as ornamental plant since it has nice small flowers. You can find it in many florist shops these days in Vienna.

Have fun and enjoy the beautiful natural environment of Vienna

Unser Kurs

Blakan fever in Vienna

I started my first post in this blog in German, but to be honest my German is still not that good to write long and not-boring-posts. So I guess I will be writing in English from time to time.
In my posts, I will be writing about my experience in Vienna and learning Deutsch and my view of the city. I will also try to write about some of the events going on in these days in Vienna and you might be interested as well. I will try to include some “Deutsch tip of the day” in some of my post. Like all the languages there are tons of tiny yet important details that you could easily neglect them but if you notice and pay attention to them, they will make a difference. I am doing A2.2 right now, so don’t expect anything from ‚Faust‘, but some thing in the order of ‚Dative‘ and ‚Akkusativ‘. I am sure there are many of us still struggling with the Dativ and Akkusativ every day….
Today I want to tell you about a Balkan music festival taking place between April 26th and May 13th. It is called Balkan Fever (2012), it was initiated in 2004 and on the website (https://balkanfever.at/de/)it is mentioned as “the largest music event of its kind in Europe” which I found a bit exaggerated, but any how. There are not so many bands in this festival, but a few of them are quite interesting.
The first one I definitely suggest to the ‚World Music‘ lovers is the Romanian band “Fanfare Shukar”. I’ve heard their music before and they have some good works. it is a traditional band from the village of Zece Prãjini in Romania. Check your agenda for April 28th and if you are looking forward to some energetic Balkan bras band music, don’t miss it.
My other suggestion is a Iranian/Serbian band called “Sormeh” (Persian for eye liner) on May 3rd. There you can get the chance to hear a more experimental music; Big variety of themes ranging from Iranian, Serbian, to East Europe and Yiddish music. I listened to some of their works available on the Internet and I found their music interesting.

Lernen Deutsch: jetzt oder nie!

Hallo!

Warum?
